The Cal Poly Foundation incorporated as a philanthropic tax-exempt foundation [a 501(c)(3) corporation] and an official auxiliary of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in March 2006. The Cal Poly Foundation led by Cal Poly alumni and friends was incorporated to generate private support that will play a crucial role in building and maintaining Cal Poly's multidisciplinary Learn by Doing educational model.

The foundation was organized in March 2006 to build on the success of the university's record-breaking Centennial Campaign which raised $264.4 million by its close at the end of 2004.  

In addition to providing leadership to raise private support for the university, the foundation board also manages the university’s $200 million endowment and other private gifts.
